A smaller, more trusted app ecosystem
Shopify deadlines through April 2027
Five Shopify platform changes land between December 1, 2026 and April 1, 2027. Most are aimed at app developers, but store owners are the ones who notice when something stops working.
Date | What changes | What you may notice |
|---|---|---|
December 1, 2026 | Returns, exchanges and subscription apps with self-service features must use Shopify's Customer Account API for sign-in to keep their Built for Shopify status. | Apps that don't update can lose their Built for Shopify badge. |
January 1, 2027 | Public apps still using non-expiring offline access tokens are removed from the Shopify App Store and can't be installed on new stores. API version 2027-01 also becomes stable. | Existing installs keep working until April 1. The token rule doesn't cover custom apps, but they may need updates for the new API version. |
January 15, 2027 | Shopify starts showing a warning in the admin for merchants using apps that haven't moved to expiring tokens. | You'll see a warning in your Shopify admin. |
March 1, 2027 | Shopify stops loading storefront script tags on every API version. | A reviews widget, tracking snippet or upsell popup can disappear with no error message, unless the app now uses an app embed block that is switched on in your theme editor. |
April 1, 2027 | Admin API requests that use non-expiring offline tokens are rejected. | Apps that never migrated get HTTP 403 errors on those requests, and merchants lose access to the app until they re-authenticate. |
Shopify deprecated legacy customer accounts on February 26, 2026 and said a final sunset date would be announced later in 2026. As of November 7, 2026, it hadn't been. Legacy accounts already can't be used for B2B.
What we expect: breakage in early 2027 that's easy to miss. Some apps will disappear from the App Store, and some storefront features will vanish after March 1 and go unnoticed for weeks, because the store keeps taking orders.
What to do now (about half an hour):
List every app on your store and ask each vendor, in writing, whether it uses app embed blocks and expiring tokens.
Open your theme editor, go to App embeds, and check that the apps you rely on are switched on.
In your customer account settings, check whether you're still on legacy accounts. If so, plan the move now, before Shopify sets the date for you.
If you have custom apps, ask whoever maintains them about the 2027-01 API changes.

The 12 Shopify trends for 2027
1. AI agents and agentic commerce become a real sales channel
Shopify is building the plumbing for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot to find products in its stores and complete purchases. In January 2026 it launched the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed with Google, alongside a new Agentic plan (Shopify announcement). In April, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce and Stripe joined its Tech Council, alongside founding members Etsy, Target and Wayfair. In September, Meta became an AI channel in the Shopify admin, with products shared by default. Later in the year Shopify let merchants manage their stores from Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's Muse, added Universal Checkout so partners can offer one checkout across brands, and said every Shopify store is agent-ready by default.
A Search Engine Journal study published in October 2026 tested 122 top Shopify stores between August and September, and none passed all nine of its purchase checks (test results). The best three reached seven. Shopify's default connects a store to agents, but the store's own data still has to answer their questions.
What we expect: AI channels will appear as their own line in sales reports in 2027. Those sales will favor stores whose data an AI agent can read and trust.
What to do now: check your AI channel settings in the Shopify admin to see which agents your products are shared with, then work on trend 3.
2. Paid ads arrive inside AI shopping assistants
Shopify introduced sponsored products through its Catalog API in 2026 and said promoted placements were planned. Later in the year it added ChatGPT Ads.
What we expect: once AI agents are a sales channel, brands will pay to be placed in them. "AI shopping ads" is likely to become a budget line in 2027, next to Google Shopping and Meta. The same product data that earns free visibility will decide how well paid placements perform.
What to do now: don't move ad budget yet. Fix your product data first (trend 3), because every agent ad will be built on it.
3. Product data becomes the new SEO
Shopify has added tools for AI-ready product data, structured product information for agents, product compliance disclosures, product data mapping by sales channel and business details for AI channels.
In the Search Engine Journal test, 0 of 88 stores gave a usable answer when asked what shipping to Boston would cost. A live checkout priced it for 36 of 74, so an agent could get the number only by starting a purchase. Only 7% of product pages exposed the return window as structured data. And 51 of the 122 stores blocked their policy pages in robots.txt. That block isn't Shopify's current default: it persists on themes with an old robots.txt.liquid template, and deleting the template restores the default.
What we expect: for years, SEO meant writing for Google's crawler. In 2027 a growing share of that work will be making product attributes, shipping rules and return policies readable by machines, because an AI agent can't recommend a product if it can't answer "how much is shipping and can I return it?"
What to do now: fill in product attributes and categories properly, set up shipping rates and return policies in Shopify's own settings rather than only on a text page, and check that robots.txt doesn't block your policy pages.
4. Shopify Sidekick moves from answering questions to doing the work
Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI assistant, has gained multi-step task completion, workflow automations, the ability to work with your installed apps and multitasking. Sidekick app extensions are now open to all developers, and Sidekick can take on more technical tasks and learn your theme and design preferences.
What we expect: merchants will get used to asking for admin work in plain language instead of clicking through settings. Apps that don't plug into Sidekick will start to feel dated.
What to do now: write down the admin chores your team repeats every week and try them in Sidekick. If you have a custom app, ask whether it should get a Sidekick extension.
5. Merchants build their own simple apps with AI
Shopify now lets merchants generate custom apps from a plain-language request in Sidekick, build with AI coding partners such as Lovable, and run lightweight apps without a separate backend. It also released an AI Toolkit for builders.
What we expect: small, single-purpose apps, such as a custom field or a simple automation, will increasingly be generated by merchants themselves in 2027. The work that stays with developers is what AI-generated apps struggle with: business logic with many edge cases, integrations with ERPs and other systems, security, and keeping everything running through Shopify's API changes. Someone also has to fix generated apps when they break.
What to do now: try building small things yourself. For anything that touches orders, payments or customer data, have a developer review it before it goes live.

6. B2B moves from Shopify Plus to standard plans
B2B gross merchandise volume (GMV) on Shopify grew 74% in Q3 2026, according to the earnings call (transcript). Shopify has added ERP integrations, EDI workflows, B2B support in its newer themes, and B2B features on more plans. QuickBooks and Mailchimp now support B2B natively.
What we expect: many more mid-sized brands will run wholesale and retail from one Shopify store without upgrading to Plus. ERP connections, customer-specific pricing and B2B portals will become a bigger share of store work. Because legacy customer accounts can't handle B2B, this trend also pushes stores off legacy accounts.
What to do now: if you sell wholesale through email, spreadsheets or a separate store, check which B2B features your current plan now includes.

7. Selling abroad becomes a standard setup
International GMV grew 32% in Q3. Talking about its international rollouts on the same call, Shopify made its one direct statement about 2027: "There'll be a lot more of this to come in 2027." During 2026 it brought Managed Markets to the UK and Canada, Shopify Payments to the UAE and Shopify Capital to France. It also added all-in prices that include duties and taxes, flat-rate shipping, shipping set per market, and more local payment methods.
What we expect: more countries and more local payment methods in 2027. For mid-sized stores, per-market pricing and duty-inclusive prices will stop being an advanced setup and become the default.
What to do now: look at where your foreign orders already come from and set up a proper market for the biggest one, with local currency, local payment methods and prices that include duties.
8. Shopify Payments and Shop Pay get harder to avoid
On the Q3 call, Shopify said Shopify Payments penetration passed 68%, up 3 points year over year, and Shop Pay GMV grew 50%. Revenue from merchant solutions grew 35% that quarter, while subscription revenue grew 20%. Shopify also added a way to switch to Shopify Payments with zero downtime and made Shop Pay available to any brand on any platform.
What we expect: Shopify's merchant solutions revenue, 78% of the Q3 total, is growing faster than its subscription revenue. Expect a steady push in 2027 toward Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shopify Capital and Balance, with more features that only work on Shopify's own stack.
What to do now: if you use a third-party payment gateway, compare your real total cost against Shopify Payments once a year, counting every fee on both sides.
9. Online and in-store become one customer
Offline GMV grew 30% year over year in Q3. Shopify has added POS Hub, subscriptions on POS, a faster point-of-sale app, multi-entity selling across retail locations, expanded in-store customer recognition, and recent carts saved across POS devices.
What we expect: a shopper's online history and cart will follow them into the shop. Retailers who keep in-store sales in a separate system will fall behind on basics such as recognizing a returning customer.
What to do now: if you have physical locations on another POS, work out what it would take to move them onto Shopify POS before your next hardware refresh.
10. Store design by prompt, and headless beyond Hydrogen
Shopify now offers AI theme generation and Canvas, a store design tool. It also introduced a new theme architecture where page structure lives in Liquid templates, a rebuilt Hydrogen that works with any framework, and Vercel Shop, a Next.js template. ("Headless" means running your storefront as a separate custom front end instead of a standard Shopify theme.)
What we expect: getting a decent-looking store live will take less time and money in 2027. Brands that want headless will be able to use a framework their team already knows. At the same time, the new theme architecture closes part of the gap, so fewer brands will need headless at all.
What to do now: before a redesign, decide whether you have a real reason to go headless, such as heavy content, several brands or a team that already works in React. If you don't, build on the new theme architecture.

11. Test first, then launch with Shopify Rollouts
Shopify's Rollouts feature lets you schedule launches and run A/B tests on your online store and checkout, and the SimGym app simulates shopper behavior with AI agents before you go live. Since October 1, 2026, discounts can be included in Rollouts.
What we expect: in 2027, theme and checkout changes on serious stores will go out as tests and scheduled launches. Merchants will start asking their agencies for test results along with the screenshots.
What to do now: put your next theme change through Rollouts, even a small one, so your team learns the workflow before a big launch.
12. A smaller, more trusted app ecosystem
Shopify's October 2026 security update added IP allowlists, a way for developers to declare which servers their app talks to, identity verification for developers, and an app security hub (developer blog). It also requires unique app names, and collaborator requests now show how long a partner has been on Shopify and roughly how many stores it works with.
What we expect: abandoned and poorly maintained apps will drop out in early 2027. Merchants will look harder at who they let into their store, apps and agencies alike, and a verifiable track record will count for more.
What to do now: remove apps you no longer use. For the rest, check when each was last updated.
